Qualified educational fund giving trusts
Qualified educational fund giving trusts, which were newly established under the FY2013 tax system reforms, are exempt from the gifts tax. The trusts are established to allow grandparents to provide lump sum contributions to educational funds for grandchildren and other young family members. Each beneficiary can receive up to JPY15 million free of gift tax.
In addition to the benefit of enriching the education of the next generation, it reduces educational expenses and is expected to increase consumer spending (stimulate economic activity) as well as generate economic capacity from children.
